David Locke is a world-weary American journalist who has been sent to cover a conflict in northern Africa, but he makes little progress with the story. Turning his hand to writing and directing, Steve Buscemi’s debut feature Trees Lounge is a still-largely unsung indie masterpiece capturing the chaos of hopeless loser Tommy (Buscemi) as he stumbles through life, occasionally trying to pull himself together but always falling apart again. 

It radiates authenticity capturing the characters, domestic rivalries and melancholy of this suburban life where the bar - Trees Lounge of the title – and alcohol are his refuge. 

The film made such an impression on Sopranos creator David Chase that he hired the film’s casting director to cast Sopranos and gave Buscemi four episodes to direct and made him a regular member of cast in season five (as Tony Soprano’s cousin Tony B).  

Evoking the lived in feel of vintage John Cassavetes, this disarmingly perceptive blue-collar character study is anchored by Buscemi’s compelling performance turning what could just be a selfish, irresponsible character into someone we want to see redeemed.

Newly restored in 4K to coincide with its 40th anniversary, the 1984 film was directed by renowned filmmaker Jonathan Demme and is considered by critics as the greatest concert film of all time. Stop Making Sense stars core band members David Byrne, Tina Weymouth, Chris Frantz, and Jerry Harrison along with Bernie Worrell, Alex Weir, Steve Scales, Lynn Mabry and Edna Holt. The live performance was shot over the course of three nights at Hollywood's Pantages Theater in December of 1983 and features Talking Heads' most memorable songs.

A frustrated housewife, Francine Fishpaw (Divine), tries to maintain her sanity while taking care of her dysfunctional household. Out 1 is a 13-hour film by Jacques Rivette. Yes, 773 minutes. The film is structurally indebted to early silent serials, such as Louis Feuillade’s Les Vampires, and is thus divided into eight distinctive episodes of around 90 – 100 minutes each. There are several independent narratives and sub-plots, with many of the characters loosely connected to each other.

Loosely inspired by Honoré de Balzac’s La Comédie humaine, Out 1: Noli me tangere is an absorbing, multi-stranded epic involving a quest to uncover a secret society in post-May 1968 Paris, with an enormous cast made up of French heavyweights like Jean-Pierre Léaud, Juliet Berto and Bernadette Lafont, not to mention cameos from directors like Eric Rohmer and Barbet Schroeder.

Constructed as eight feature-length episodes which run over almost thirteen hours, it was originally screened just once in its original cut in 1971, with rare subsequent screenings in the ‘90s and ‘00s becoming the stuff of legend in cinema circles.

We last screened OUT 1 over two days in 2015, in collaboration with The Badlands Collective and A Nos Amours. Now, we are doing the unthinkable – presenting the entire 13-hour film in one sitting on Bank Holiday Monday 31st August!

Events like this are very rare and occupy several regular programme slots. As it runs in 8 episodes across 4 usual programme slots (2 episodes per programme slot), the ticket price is set to cover our operational costs. At £45, this works out at approximately £5.63 per episode. When we last ran this event in 2015, tickets were £40 for non-members. Increasing the price to £45 over more than a decade is well below the rate of inflation, meaning the event is actually cheaper in real terms than it was in 2015.

Salvatore "Sal" Fragione is the Italian owner of a pizzeria in Brooklyn. A neighborhood local, Buggin' Out, becomes upset when he sees that the pizzeria's Wall of Fame exhibits only Italian actors. Buggin' Out believes a pizzeria in a black neighborhood should showcase black actors, but Sal disagrees. The wall becomes a symbol of racism and hate to Buggin' Out and to other people in the neighborhood, and tensions rise.

Forty years after the film’s original release, Anime Limited is proud to present an all-new 4K restoration of the film, supervised by director Mamoru Oshii, in cinemas nationwide for the very first time.

The film is a creative collaboration between acclaimed director Mamoru Oshii (Ghost in the Shell), who wrote and directed the feature, and revered artist Yoshitaka Amano (Final Fantasy, Vampire Hunter D). The film beautifully intertwines Oshii’s thematic reflections on philosophy and theology with Amano’s distinctive ink painting style, culminating in an arrestingly beautiful hand-drawn allegorical fantasy.

Keong comes from Hong Kong to visit New York for his uncle's wedding. His uncle runs a market in the Bronx, and Keong offers to help out while Uncle is on his honeymoon. During his stay in the Bronx, Keong befriends a neighbour kid and beats up some neighbourhood thugs who cause problems at the market. One of those petty thugs in the local gang stumbles into a criminal situation way over his head.

From this inventory of imagery, Lynch fashions two separate but intersecting stories, one about a jazz musician (Bill Pullman), tortured by the notion that his wife is having an affair, who suddenly finds himself accused of her murder. The other is a young mechanic (Balthazar Getty) drawn into a web of deceit by a temptress who is cheating on her gangster boyfriend. These two tales are linked by the fact that the women in both are played by the same actress (Patricia Arquette).

Jack McKee and Cecil Colson are two bumbling drifters who make a living by rustling cattle from other peoples herds in the wilds of Montana. Both hustle and rustle their way in the world by targeting cattle owned by wealthy ranch owner John Brown. Frustrated that someone is killing his cattle, John hires a pair of ranch hands, Burt and Curt, to find the rustlers. When a mysterious alien power threatens the atmosphere of Earth in the 23rd century, Kirk and his crew must time travel back to 1986 San Francisco to save mankind. Exploring this strange new world, they encounter punk rock, pizza and exact-change buses that are as alien as anything in the far reaches of the galaxy.

Set in feudal Japan, this film presents an intriguing tale of violent crime in the woods, told from the perspective of four different characters -- a bandit, a woman, her husband and a woodcutter. Only two things about the incident seem to be clear -- the woman was raped and her husband is now dead. However, the other elements radically differ as the four participants and/or witnesses relate their own stories (with the dead man, eerily enough, speaking through a medium). As each account is revealed, what seemed black-and-white turns to various hues of gray, leading to surprising -- and confounding -- revelations.

The ambassador of the Latin American republic of Miranda (Fernando Rey), M. Thevenot (Paul Frankeur), his wife Simone (Delphine Seyrig) and her sister Florence (Bulle Ogier) arrive for a dinner party at the house of Alice Sénéchal (Stéphane Audran) and her husband Henri (Jean-Pierre Cassel), only to learn that they were mistaken about the date. In director Luis Buñuel's surreal fantasy, the six bourgeois friends repeatedly gather for a dinner that never quite arrives.

This new 4K Final Cut, overseen by Mann, enhances the film’s depth, visual clarity and sound, offering audiences the ultimate immersive version. Shot in 1985, MANHUNTER was on a frontier in both its subject matter and film form, initiating an impressive list of subsequent films and series.  

“40 years ago – though armed with Thomas Harris’ excellent novel, “Red Dragon” – its subject matter, the profiling of serial killers, as well as being shocking and raw, was unknown. When adapting, I wanted to make its storytelling deliver audiences into a certain state of threat and emotional engagement. Integral to that was the visualization and use of music with lyrics sometimes working like a libretto. We have carefully remastered the film to try to evoke that mood and intensity, heightened with audio sourced from the original 5.1 35mm analog masters. This latest iteration is that version of the film with which I’m most satisfied.” said director Michael Mann.  

Under the guidance of Mann, this 4K scan of the original 35mm negative – with a few shots from an interpositive - was conformed and digitally restored at L’Immagine Ritrovata in Bologna. Both the theatrical version and the UHD HDR & SDR video color gradings were performed by Stefan Sonnenfeld at Company 3 in Los Angeles with the director. Sound restoration was done at Audio Mechanics from an original 35mm magnetic 6-track printmaster to release a new 5.1 mix by Luke Schwartzweller at Fox. Technical coordination and deliveries were managed by L’Immagine Ritrovata. This project was supervised by Becca Mann and STUDIOCANAL team, Jean-Pierre Boiget and Delphine Roussel.  

For Michael Mann, the process is about renewing the film’s immediacy for contemporary audiences: “If the picture was left the way it was, it would be interesting, but you’d feel some distance …you’d be observing it somewhat.  I’m more interested in its original intent impacting you the same way it may have in 1986…that is, to bring you into it again in the original way.” 

As a film distinguished by its striking visual style, including Colleen Attwood’s costume design, Academy Award- winner Mel Bourne’s art direction, Dante Spinotti’s lighting, Mann worked with his long-time collaborator, Stefan Sonnenfeld (Company 3), to develop a new color grade for ‘The Final Cut’ that engages a contemporary audience while honoring the film’s lasting legacy. 

“A good example is the use of primaries and secondaries in combinations that don’t occur in nature for an unsettling ambiance or the use of blue for night-time imagery. We’ve changed values subtly sometimes, but significantly, to enhance the impact without changing the dramatic intent of the film,” said Stefan Sonnenfeld. 

He adds: “Michael… wants you to understand the story and the mood and the environment… and then asks you to interpret that in colour… He also tells you what emotion he’s trying to evoke from the scene.” 

The new version also introduces an HDR presentation, offering an intensified new experience. “So that nobody’s ever seen the movie like that,” noted Sonnenfeld.

After Louise kills a man who attempts to rape Thelma, the two hit the road, realising that the justice system is unlikely to see their side. Their journey becomes one of personal awakening, radical defiance, and ultimately, tragic liberation.

Thelma & Louise is more than a road movie—it’s a feminist landmark, a genre-defying tale of friendship, freedom, and fury that still resonates over three decades later.

Parajanov's aim was not a conventional biography but a cinematic expression of his work, resulting in an extraordinary visual poem. Key moments in his subject's life are illustrated through a series of exquisitely orchestrated tableaux filled with rich colour and stunning iconography, each scene a celluloid painting alive with stylised movement.

Andrei Tarkovsky’s visionary final film unfolds in the hours before a nuclear holocaust. Erland Josephson, in an award-winning role, plays retired actor Alexander who is celebrating his birthday with family and friends when a crackly TV announcement warns of an imminent nuclear catastrophe.

Wes Craven re-invented and revitalised the slasher-horror genre with this modern horror classic, which manages to be funny, clever and scary, as a fright-masked knife maniac stalks high-school students in middle-class suburbia. Craven is happy to provide both tension and self-parody as the body count mounts - but the victims aren't always the ones you'd expect.

My improvisations on viola and piano draw inspiration from the leitmotifs and sound effects of 70s horror soundtracks and the languages of Second Viennese School composers contemporary to Murnau, also Jewish Traditional Music that informs my personal approach to creating a score for the film." - Hugo Max

Elaine May crafted a gangster film like no other in the nocturnal odyssey Mikey and Nicky, capitalising on the chemistry between frequent collaborators John Cassavetes and Peter Falk by casting them together as small-time mobsters whose lifelong relationship has turned sour. Set over the course of one night, this restless drama finds Nicky (Cassavetes) holed up in a hotel after the boss he stole money from puts a hit out on him. Terrified, he calls on Mikey (Falk), the one person he thinks can save him. Scripted to match the live-wire energy of its stars—alongside supporting players Ned Beatty, Joyce Van Patten, and Carol Grace—and inspired by real-life characters from May’s own childhood, this unbridled portrait of male friendship turned tragic is an unsung masterpiece of American cinema.

Mikey and Nicky on 14th October is featured as part of Gangsters Have Feelings Too, a season exploring the sensitive gangster film. The season is presented with the National Film and Television School’s Film Studies, Programming and Curation MA.

The popular comedy team of the 1940s and 1950s, Bud Abbott and Lou Costello, goes up against Universal Studios’s monsters in this zany spoof. Dracula (Bela Lugosi), the Wolf Man (Lon Chaney Jr.), and Frankenstein’s Monster (Glenn Strange) all make memorable appearances in this horror comedy mashup, which manages to do justice to both genres―a feat frequently attempted but rarely achieved.

FRANKENSTEIN (1931): Henry Frankenstein pieces together body parts in the hope of bringing a human-like creature to life. The mad scientist’s dreams are shattered by his monstrous creation awakening with rage to a world that hates and fears him.

THE BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN (1935): Dr. Frankenstein and his monster both turn out to be alive after being attacked by an angry mob. The now-chastened scientist attempts to escape his past, but a former mentor forces him to assist with the creation of a new creature.

David Fincher (Fight Club, Zodiac, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button) guides the action - physical, mental and spiritual - with a sure understanding of what terrifies us, right up to a stunning denouement that will rip the scar tissue off the most hardened soul.

The 4K restoration of “Se7en” was completed at Warner Bros. Discovery’s Motion Picture Imaging and sourced from the original camera negative. The restoration was overseen by David Fincher.

A disparate group of individuals takes refuge in an abandoned house when corpses begin to leave the graveyard in search of fresh human bodies to devour. The pragmatic Ben (Duane Jones) does his best to control the situation, but when the re-animated bodies surround the house, the other survivors begin to panic. As any semblance of order within the group begins to dissipate, the zombies start to find ways inside. One by one, the living humans become the prey of the deceased ones.
